East Grinstead is our home town. NICEIC-approved electricians upgrading fuse boards and consumer units across the town’s period High Street properties, Victorian villas, post-war estates, and the surrounding villages. Safe, compliant, and built to the latest 18th Edition standards.

McMillan Electrical has been based in East Grinstead since 2006, upgrading consumer units and replacing fuse boards right across the town and the villages around it. Whether you’re in a period property on the High Street, a Victorian villa on Lingfield Road or Baldwins Hill, a post-war family home around Imberhorne or Estcots, or a rural property out towards Forest Row and the edge of Ashdown Forest, our NICEIC-approved team ensures your electrical installation meets current 18th Edition standards.
This is the town we work from, so we know its housing better than anywhere else we cover — from the medieval timber-framed buildings that make the High Street one of the best-preserved in the country, through the Victorian expansion that followed the railway, to the estates built out through the second half of the twentieth century.
A consumer unit upgrade replaces your existing fuse box with a new, fully 18th Edition compliant board — typically fitted with individual RCBO protection on every circuit and a Type 2 Surge Protection Device. The result is a safer, smarter installation that protects your circuits independently — so if one trips, the rest of your home stays live.
Most upgrades are completed in a single day. We isolate your supply, fit the new board, test every circuit, and issue your Electrical Installation Certificate before we leave — your legal proof of compliance under Part P of the Building Regulations. As your local NICEIC electrician in East Grinstead, we handle every step of the process, from the initial assessment through to certification — and we’re only ever a few minutes away if you need us afterwards.

East Grinstead’s housing spans close to seven hundred years of building, and the electrics reflect it. The conservation area around the High Street holds timber-framed and Georgian properties where boards have often been fitted wherever there was space, with circuits added piecemeal over decades. The Victorian and Edwardian villas that went up after the railway arrived — along Lingfield Road, Baldwins Hill, and the roads above the town — are frequently on their second or third board, carrying additions for extensions, loft conversions, and garden rooms on protection that was never designed for that load.
The post-war estates around Imberhorne, Estcots, and Dunnings make up a large share of the town’s stock, and those boards increasingly fall short of current 18th Edition standards — single-RCD units and rewireable fuses are still common. Out towards Felbridge, Ashurst Wood, and Forest Row, properties are often older, on longer supply runs, and frequently fed overhead, which makes a Surge Protection Device under Amendment 2 particularly worthwhile given the exposure to lightning-induced voltage spikes. Newer homes are better specified, but most still need an SPD adding, and with a strong commuter population on the London line, demand for EV charger and home office circuits is pushing older boards past what they can safely support.
Consumer unit upgrades in East Grinstead start from £700 + VAT (£840 inc VAT) for a standard domestic property, rising from £1,000 + VAT (£1,200 inc VAT) for larger or more complex installations. Every upgrade is the same full specification — an 18th Edition compliant board with individual RCBO protection on every circuit, a Type 2 Surge Protection Device, and a full EICR on your installation, so you get a written assessment of the whole property alongside the new board.
We always provide a written, fixed-price quote after a free site visit, so the consumer unit replacement cost you’re given upfront is exactly what you’ll pay. For a full breakdown of pricing across all job types, see our consumer unit upgrade cost guide.

We’ve upgraded consumer units in every kind of property this town has — listed buildings in the conservation area, Victorian villas, post-war semis, and new builds on the edge of town. Twenty years of working from one place means we’ve usually seen your type of installation before, often on your street.
Being local also means we’re quick. No travel time to price in, no waiting for a slot that works around a round trip, and if something needs looking at after the job, we’re minutes away rather than an hour down the A22.

Everything you need to know about consumer unit upgrades across East Grinstead and the surrounding areas.
Yes. McMillan Electrical has been based in East Grinstead since 2006, and the town is where most of our work has always been. That means no travel charges, faster appointments, and an electrician who knows the area’s housing first-hand rather than from a map.
Yes. As well as the town itself, we regularly carry out consumer unit upgrades in Felbridge, Ashurst Wood, Forest Row, Dormansland, Sharpthorne, West Hoathly, Turners Hill, and Crawley Down.
Yes, and it’s a job we carry out regularly in East Grinstead. The High Street and surrounding conservation area hold a high concentration of timber-framed and period buildings, many still on original or legacy boards. We can upgrade to a fully 18th Edition compliant consumer unit with minimal disruption to the fabric of the property, and in most cases the new board goes back in the same position as the old one.
Yes. Properties on the rural edge of East Grinstead are more often fed by overhead supplies and are more susceptible to lightning-induced voltage spikes than town properties, which makes a Type 2 Surge Protection Device particularly valuable. We include SPD as standard in all our consumer unit upgrades.
The old heart of the town, and the reason East Grinstead is on the architectural map — the High Street holds one of the longest continuous runs of fourteenth-century timber-framed buildings anywhere in the country, alongside Sackville College, the Jacobean almshouse founded in 1609. Georgian and Victorian frontages fill in the rest, with flats and offices above the shops.
The Victorian and Edwardian expansion that followed the railway, built on the higher ground around the town. Baldwins Hill looks south towards Weir Wood Reservoir and the Ashdown Forest ridge, and the streets here hold substantial detached and semi-detached villas on generous plots — the kind of houses that have been added to steadily over a century.
The town’s post-war growth, built out through the 1950s, 60s, and 70s as East Grinstead expanded west and south. A mix of semis, terraces, and bungalows on established streets, close to the schools and the Imberhorne industrial estate, with the Bluebell Railway line running along the western edge.
Two villages on either side of the town — Felbridge sitting on the Surrey border towards Lingfield, Ashurst Wood on the ridge to the south-east, close to the Ashdown Forest. Both hold a mix of period cottages, interwar houses, and later infill, with Standen, the Arts and Crafts house designed by Philip Webb, just below Ashurst Wood.
South of the town the land rises into the Ashdown Forest, and the properties change with it — older houses, converted farm buildings, and homes set well back on long private drives. Forest Row itself sits on the Medway at the forest’s northern edge, a village with a strong independent character and housing to match.
East Grinstead is where we started and where we still work from — we’re proud to help keep the town’s homes, from its oldest buildings to its newest, safe, compliant, and properly protected.
